The signs of depression in men vary immensely when compared to the classic symptoms. It’s ideally wiser to recognize the signs of depression in men before starting to help them clinically .Depression in men is not rare even though men worldwide would not be happy about accepting this fact.

Visible signs of Depression in Men:

  • Aggresion is the most common sign to identify a depressed male. Men try hard in maintaining the so called macho look by going aggressive.
  • Irritability is another common Sign of Depression associated with a depressed male .May feel the person’s inadequacies often turn into irritability.
  • Sleep changes  are clearly seen .It can either be insomnia (lack of sleep ) or hypersomnia (oversleeping).
  • Low self esteem is a common Sign of Depression that can be seen. They generally also carry a feeling of guilt.
  • Focus is lost. Low concentration power and loss of memory is seen as Sign of Depression.
  • Outlook change the person may feel that there is no hope left for him.

Causes of Depression in Men:

  • Health issues can often be the prime reason to get into depression. It can slowly eat away the cream from any thriving relationships also.
  • Finance is often the considered by many as one of the strongest reason for a man to get into a brain disorder.
  • Drug Abuse is mainly triggered by both alcohol as well as drugs. They make the person very vulnerable hence readily pushes him into a depressed state of mind.
  • Genetics if there is a family history of depression then the risk factor is obviously higher.
  • Trauma in childhood if the person has been subjected to trauma or any emotional strain in childhood it would deeply affect his psyche.

Depression Wears a Look:

A condition when one feels really gloomy and dejected by continued wrong harmful happenings around him/her and is not in a position to resolve the conflicts with self help is called depression. A person who is really depressed does not show any interest in work or does not feel like freaking out and at times feels even very lazy to get out of bed. This can be treated easily with the help of a psychologist or psychiatrist clinically.

Symptoms of Depression:

There are numerous symptoms of depression by which we can easily identify that the person needs immediate medical help or not:

  • A helpless or hopeless feeling- The person who is depressed will look really miserable and will feel that there is nobody to help him/her around.
  • Appetite Loss – The person will lose his appetite and either will not have interest in eating which will lead to weight loss or will have an enormous hunger where he/she will keep on eating which in turn lead to weight gain
  • Loss of interest- They will surely lose interest even in day to day activities and always like to laze out in bed.
  • Sleep pattern change- Either will get Insomnia which is lack of sleep or hypersomnia which is oversleep.
  • Lack of concentration- Will lack concentration on anything and will face problems in taking any stable decisions or sometimes will start forgetting things.
  • Often feel like Crying- the person affected often will feel like crying for anything and everything and at times for no reason at all.
  • Giving away belongings- The person who has lost interest and is suffering from severe clinical depression will give away lots of precious things to others like household articles, jewellery, etc,
  • Suicidal Thoughts- Will often pronounce attempts of suicide and at times try committing suicide.

Categories of Depression:

There are two categories of depression. One is Situational depression and the other one is clinical depression. When one gets disappointed or feel frustrated due to some loss (loss may be a person or a thing), he/she starts feeling depressed. This kind of depression is called as Situational depression, which happens normally to everyone.

A person who feels very sad and cannot concentrate on anything and at times gets irritated even for trivial things and starts shouting at others and at times feels like ending his own life by committing suicide then that person is sure suffering from clinical depression. This needs immediate medical help.

Helping a Depression Patient:

After knowing all about depression the question is, how a person suffering from depression can be helped. A patient with depression has to be reassured of his hidden talents and interact with him making him realize the potential in him, which can be achieved in the following manner:

  • Try to acknowledge his/her feelings without being rude to them.
  • Try not to blame them for not doing their regular chores at home or outside.
  • Support him/her in all the way as much as possible with an ample amount of love and affection.
  • If he/she is not able to identify the cause of his/her depression try helping him find that out first.
  • If he/she is talking about suicide try to bring him out of that.

The careful handling of above issues with the person suffering from depression requires creating an atmosphere in which the depressed person feels relief and is interested that some one should listen to him patiently.

The above are the symptoms of depression along with best help and care suggestions, which can be provided to a depression patient to make him comfortable and open for a discussion on what is his mind instead of confining to self negative criticism creating a vicious circle with no end of the endogenous miseries.

Depression is not a disease. It is a condition, which can be rectified with a friendly environment, instead of relying on the medicines as a first course of action under observation of a Psychiatrist.

State of Depression:

Depression is a condition, when the person looks or feels sad after repeated one after the other disappointment pertaining to daily life. One acquires a devastating feeling, which overpowers man and acts as an impediment in the thinking process affecting right thinking and concentration, loosing interest in every thing like food, work place, one’s personal appearance, and disturbance in sleep etc.

Thus a vicious circle is formed due to which one goes in depression deeper and deeper day by day. The person is not in a position to express the sadness and believes he is lacking the necessary tactics.

The Depression can range from mild to severe some conditions requiring family support and public sympathy or treatment to correct the depression.
At one time or another a person suffers from Depression, human body has an autocorrect mode. If you forget some bad incidence associated with the depression, you have the ability to become normal;

The Yardstick of Depression:

DEPRESSION: It  is sum total of following effects, which play their role in causing a depression or rectifying the same in an easy to follow manner as given below:

Monitoring your Feelings: Full of depression, sadistic, anxiety of what has happened and what is not happening or boring without any contribution.

Measuring Energy: Feeling tired, getting fatigued, not able to make efforts, slow responses.

Sleep where it has gone: Wakeful Nights and Drowsy Days. No time to work.

Slow Thinking: Thinking not to be thought, misfit by deeds, concentration disturbed, habitual forgetter or indecision.

Loss of Interest: No interest in appearance, working place, life is dull.

Self Value: Diminished self Value, low profile feeling of deep seated guilt.

Body Aches: Body aches allover because of disuse.

Not Worth Living: Suicidal tendencies can be activated without any provocation.

If any of the five symptoms are present and persisting more than a fortnight, it is a clear cut sign of Depression.

Causes of Depression:

Depression in most cases a result of past repeated set backs during life pertaining to some death, relation break offs or monetary problems, dissatisfaction at work or a critical health problem. Any thing achieved is exhilaration and some thing not achieved is the opposite i.e. Depression. It is a reaction to wrong stimulus. Depression can have some hereditary causes also.

Various Faces of Depression:

Reactive Depression: An unhappy outcome in one’s normal living like a death of near and dear, disrupted spouse relations and or losing a source of income.
Endogenous Depression: It is also called un-ipolar because other end is not visible and is deep rooted. It can be reflected by extensive tiredness, slow thought process, lacking focus, no sleep at night and feeling worst early morning.

Manic Depressive Illness: it is also called bipolar. Depression alternates with a good feeling temporarily.

Treatment:

Bipolar depression and General depressions respond well with treatment under the care of a Psychologist with supporting attitude of the family members.
